I started a new job several months ago now. Today we had a support group meeting (for all of us in hospice care). It was great!! Just what I had been needing.
This job is one of the best and yet hardest things I have ever done in my life.
People ask me how I deal with watching people die everyday. I don't think of my job in that sense. I think about what I am able to bless people with each and every day. I have the opportunity to help them with final wishes, to help families get those last good byes or things that have never been said but need to be. And I am lucky enough to walk beside people right before they meet our maker. It is not easy and there are days when I really wonder if I have it in me to do this job, but then there always seems to be that reassurance right when I need it.
We received this quote today and I thought that it not only applied to my job but how we live each and every day. I hope it encourages you as much as it did me!
When we honestly ask ourselves which persons in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving much advise, solutions, or cures, have chose rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with gentle and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is the friend who cares.
